They'd been in the dinghy for around two hours without any luck, and Kailen was starting to wonder if they'd ever catch any fish.

"Don't worry, son," his father said cheerfully, "it won't be long now."

Kailen had been enthusiastic two hours ago, even one hour ago. But the time was beginning to drag. Sure, the lake was beautiful, and his father passed the time telling amusing stories and running invention ideas past him. That was all very well and good, but they hadn't caught any fish
.

He put his chin in his cupped hand and sighed. His mom had promised to cook any fish they caught for supper. At this rate, he was going to go hungry.

With a sad flick of his fishing pole, Kailen stared out at the water. The afternoon sunlight reflected off the peaking ripples, turning them orange. Ducks swam by, feet paddling furiously under the water.

His dad looked down at him, seeing the dejected expression. Padma put a hand on Kailen's shoulder, rubbing it through his shirt. "It's ok. I promise our luck will change."

Kailen glanced up at his father and nodded. "'kay." He looked back at the water, watching as one straggling duck floated past their dinghy.

Suddenly, the duck gave a surprised quack and exploded.

Kailen sat up quickly, startled, and Padma's head whipped around. Feathers floated down from the sky and landed on the surface of the water.

"Well," Padma said slowly, "I suppose we could look at that as being a good omen..."

"Dad!" Kailen yelled excitedly. "A fish!"

Padma grinned and looked at Kailen's fishing pole. "Is it tugging?"

"No, right there!" Kailen pointed over the side of the dinghy. Amidst the floating feathers, a fish slowly bobbed to the surface. "And there!" He pointed to another. "And there!"

Kailen felt his father grab the back of his pants to keep him steady as he leant over the side of the boat and scooped fish out of the water with his bare hands. He caught about a dozen fish before Padma tugged him back into the craft.

"Well, do you think that's enough for your mother to cook for supper?"

"Yeah," Kailen grinned, putting the last fish into the bucket.

"Exploding ducks must be good omens." Padma kicked over the outboard motor and turned them towards shore. Kailen sat at the bobbing bow of the boat, chin in his hands, smiling into the spray of water.
