Notes: This was originally part of Waxing Lyrical written in 2003 that didn't fit in with the flow of that piece, and so I cut it out. But I could never quite trash it, and it made a nice little vignette on its own, I think.
Feedback: always welcome, as is constructive criticism.

"What are you doing?" Collin asked, only mildly irritated that his reading was interrupted. He looked around at all the burning candles. If they had a smoke detector, it'd probably be beeping by now.
Fox shuffled closer -- close enough to touch the blond, and yet he didn't. Not straight away, anyway. The Indian boy's dark blue eyes searched Collin's; they studied him with a loving intensity that his boyfriend found equal parts enjoyable and perturbing.
At length, Collin saw a slow smile spread across Fox's features in the candlelight. It wasn't a goofy grin, it was a smile that made Collin return it, even as a blush stained his high cheekbones."
"What?" he asked, self-consciously.
Fox made a move to touch him. He reached out a long-fingered hand and buried it in Collin's flaxen hair, ruffling it affectionately. "I like you," he said without a hint of humour or sarcasm. "I love you, of course, but I like you, too. That's a little different, y'know?"
Collin's blush deepened. It was such a Kailen thing to say. To say something that Collin didn't know he wanted to hear until he did. The blond was sucked into the depths of Fox's blue eyes. The hand left his hair, soft finger-pads skirting his cheek.
Collin was beautiful in the candlelight, Fox realised. His hair was pale and skin burnished gold in the warm, yellow glow of the fire. It added a spark to his eyes, too. It was more than physical beauty; they burned on his inner core of strength.
For too long Collin had never realised how special he was. He never believed it himself. It had taken his best friend time and time again to tell him. Now they were together, Fox could find completely new levels on which to express this to him. The young man had so much in him to give; he was just too afraid and wary about giving it to the wrong person.
But he gave it to Fox. He gave just about everything he had to Fox. It was a humbling experience.
Lips curved up, and a tentative hand came to rest on Fox's upper arm. "I like you, too," Collin answered, his voice soft.
