Marlane stared into the yellow eyes of the young rattlesnake curled around her wrist. The snake, only young and barely the span of her hand, emitted soft hissing sounds, accompanied by the occasional rattle.

Her brow furrowed. "I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying."

Marlane suddenly felt the tickle of a forked tongue by her other hand. A very large rattlesnake slithered next to her on the mattress, nudging her hand up so that her fingers stroked the length of its large body.

She addressed the larger reptile, without taking her eyes from the smaller. "Aaron, I don't understand."

"He wants to know why your scales are so pale and smooth," Aaron replied, laying his head gently on her stomach.

Marlane couldn't help the small smile that curved her lips. She extended a finger and stroked the soft scales of the baby rattlesnake, tracing its beautiful patterns. "My skin and hair are a little bit different to your scales, they are made out of different things."

She glanced at Aaron who hissed and rattled to his offspring, telling the serpent what she said. The small snake hissed back, and Aaron responded. Marlane watched the exchange, head going back and forth from the two snakes like she was watching a tennis match.

"What did he say?" she asked Aaron.

Aaron flexed, muscles rippling under his epidermis. "He wanted to know why you don't shed your skin like I can," he said.

"Oh." Marlane didn't know what to say. She supposed it made sense that the tiny creature might think she was like Aaron, and was also a snake underneath. "What did you tell him?"

Aaron turned towards her and flicked his tongue, yellow slitted eyes carrying a surprising amount of character. "I told him you are not a snake, but are beautiful enough without covering you with scales."

"Oh," she said again, cheeks going slightly pink. The tiny snake flicked his tongue out as well. He uncurled himself from around her wrist, settling instead in the palm of her hand and closed his eyes.
