Notes: If you're familiar with my work (or with me!) you know that I wasn't happy with how FH ended for my favourite characters. According to the post-script of the series, you can either go with the idea that Fox and Collin split, which would lead into the other comic OPB, or they were able to stay together. I am in the latter's camp, but recently I got to thinking about them breaking up. If I entertained the notion of them breaking up... this is how I think it would've happened. I think their characters weren't as tight or as consistently portrayed in the last year or so, but I've done my best to keep the line of story that had been happening, reconciling the old and new characterisations and doing my best to be objective about it, not subjective. To that end, this is a third person limited fic, and it follows Nefertari's experiences with the events. Many thanks to my 3 very talented betas, who put up with me pasting things to them, haranguing them, and emailing rewrites at odd hours. It was important that this fic got a really good going-over, because I wanted it to be good. I think it's about as good as I can make it right now. I hope you enjoy. :)

I had trouble naming this piece, but it came to me as I thought about Fox losing Collin becomes a directionless compass. I looked up some navigation terms and came across 'dead reckoning', which is a way to calculate one's current position using previously determined positions, then extrapolating future positions based on that data. The part I liked the best about it, however, was this: A disadvantage of dead reckoning is that since new values are calculated solely from previous values, the errors and uncertainties of the process are cumulative, so the error and uncertainty in the value grow with time. To me, this is very indicative of what's happening with Fox right at this time, and what will happen to him in the near future.

I don't know whether I ever did a good job of it, but I wanted this piece to be a little bit of foreshadowing as to what would come. Fox was getting more and more consumed with his job at The Daily Warning, and Collin finally had a good friend outside of Fox, so he was starting to entertain himself when Fox wasn't available, which was frequently. There's also that element of Fox just expecting Collin to be there for him, and the odd realisation when he's not.

Notes: Duo POV. This is another of the fics from this series where I'm really happy with the end result. It took a while to strike the right balance for Duo's internal monologue. There were a lot of balls up in the air at once in this one, and I'm happy how they all meshed. I always get the feeling that Duo would avoid funerals like the plague. One part I'm really oddly pleased with is Trowa's light-hearted moment, making Duo laugh after the funeral ceremony. This garnered some incredibly thoughtful feedback, one from someone who has experienced a military funeral before. I have no prior experience with military funerals, so to get the beautiful response, I was incredibly touched and humbled.

This was the first appearance of Collin's parents, before they appeared in FH in any way, shape or form. In fact, the LJ version will have different names, as their given names were changed just prior to their first actual appearance in the comic. For accuracy to canon, my revision has included their names being updated to the correct ones. What just amused me, though, was finding all the references to 'Benny' and changing them to 'Jerry'... get it? Haha. This also marks a reference to the friendship beads that cropped up in the Fox and Collin LJs, as well as many a strip, being worn by Fox and Collin. In rereading FH I found a strip from 2004 where Jerry is very much on the same tangent:

Collin would feel down sometimes, but not for any particularly nameable reason, and his inability to explain to Fox why he was down would sometimes cause problems. He felt like he had to have a reason, and Fox did too, in a way. Silly Fox. But Collin's learning about how a proper relationship works, and rather than be avoidant he does pursue the boy and clears the air.

Apart from those little changes, it hopefully sticks to canon strips fairly well, and explains the situation regarding the Dean from Mik and Tybalt's past. This backstory of Mik's hadn't been explored in BMB, and I only knew it from talking to Sandra about it. With the basic ideas of what happened, it gave me a lot of flexibility to play with events. If we call C&C canon mik/ty before BMB started, it makes Tybalt missing out on seeing his parents at that juncture quite significant. This is explored in my WIP AU fic, Rewriting History.

According to a conversation I had with the creator of BMB years ago, she said that when transplanting the cast from TiH to BMB, it was a 50/50 toss-up as to whether it was going to be Mik/Harl or Tybalt/Harl as that primary relationship. Mik/Harl obviously won, but I wondered what the flip-side might've been like. I maintain that the Harley in a relationship with Tybalt would have a few key differences in his makeup, being influenced by a different partner. For one, he'd be a lot better at manipulation.
