It never meant anything when they woke up tangled together. In their tiny room, there wasn't room for anything more or bigger than a double bed mattress on a low wooden frame with broken slats.

There was plenty of room, except for when Mr Khaleel upstairs used his bathroom sink. Water leaked from the apartment upstairs, dripping down onto the mattress about a foot away from where it was pushed up against the wall, limiting the amount of room both Padma and Rafi had to sleep in.

They always started out separately, back to back. Then some mornings Rafi would wake up first with a weight on his chest. He opened his eyes and saw a scruffy mound of black hair beneath his chin.

Padma's breath tickled the skin of Rafi's torso with his rhythmic exhalations. A dark arm was flung carelessly over his waist. Rafi's own right arm conformed to the curve of Padma's back, the flat of his hand lightly resting over his spine. And one of the Indian man's legs always managed to get tangled with his own.

Rafi's hand moved up, skimming the bumps of Padma's backbone. A tired sigh burst from his lips, ruffling the strands of thick black hair.

Rafi craned his neck forward slightly, coming close to burying his nose in the shiny, thick strands. He drew back sharply when Padma shifted, inclining his head up more. There were soft smiles in sleep as he dreamed of a dancer.

Rafi grunted gruffly and tousled Padma's hair in a private gesture of affection, before drifting back into slumber.
